Rutgers Business School Hosts Weeklong Camp
Rutgers Business School (RBS) spearheaded a week-long intensive camp led by Ron Richter, a professor at RBS for high school students interested in a future in the business world. Whether it be accounting, financing, or marketing, multiple opportunities were presented to students to help them get started in the field.
The camp was held for two sessions, each for one week. The first session ran from July 7 through July 13, and the second lasted from July 21 through July 27. The camp gave students a firsthand look at how businesses run and work, as well as how RBS operates.
Campers were divided into teams and created a product to pitch on the last day of the camp in front of a panel of judges. Throughout the week, campers were granted mentors that helped critique and polish their pitches, including college mentors and business executives. The project was a competition and at the end of the week, one team was chosen as the winner.
The camp took field trips to multiple businesses in order to further educate the campers on how to survive and thrive in the business world. During the first session, campers toured AT&T, MassMutual and Johnson & Johnson where they were able to talk to interns and employees each company.
“I liked how the camp ensured my interest in business, and gave me a taste of what the business world would be like,” said camper Sierra Edmonds.
Campers engaged in physical exercises that strengthened their team-building and leadership skills, as well as listening in on lectures about finance, entrepreneurship, and marketing. Campers stayed in the RBS Livingston Apartments and ate in the dining hall allowing them to get a full college experience to prepare them for the future.
“I also liked the environment of the camp. Everyone was able to make friends in a matter of minutes, and we all found that we had at least one thing in common,” said Edmonds.
As the last group presented and the winner was announced on the last day of the camp, campers were able to walk out with new friends and colleagues, now more confident in their ability to take on a career in business.
