New Activity Participation Fee Program Announced for Hillsborough Public Schools

Hillsborough Township Board of Education announced on Wednesday August 6 that students at Hillsborough High School, Hillsborough Middle School and Auten Road Intermediate School will now undergo a new Activity Participation Fee Program.

“Due to difficult budgetary issues and the failed referendum on March 12, 2019, Hillsborough Schools will join many districts throughout the state that charge students for participating in afterschool activities, including athletics, clubs and marching band,” said the Hillsborough Board of Education.

This new program has assigned costs to various activities that take place across the district. The Board has released the fee policy for this program, which includes different costs varying by school.

BREAKDOWN OF COSTS BY SCHOOL:

Hillsborough High School

  • $100 for each individual sport (each season)

  • $100 for each cheerleading squad

  • $100 for participation in marching band or winter guard

  • $50 to participate in any clubs/activities

Hillsborough Middle School

  • $40 to participate in any clubs/activities

Auten Road Intermediate School

  • $25 to participate in any clubs/activities

The payment for participation is due at the first practice (for sports/cheerleading/marching band) and/or at the organizational meeting of the first club the student joins during the academic year. Families who qualify for free or reduced lunch are eligible for an activity fee waiver. Refunds will not be made for any reason once the team or club roster has been determined.
