Yesterday Movie Review

On June 28, movie theaters around the world opened to thousands of eager viewers as the hoped-to-be hit movie, “Yesterday,” premiered. Despite lackluster reviews from movie critics, the film resonated well with audience members, grossing $17 million after its opening weekend.

The plot follows Jack Malik, a struggling singer-songwriter in an English seaside town, whose ideas of fame and stardom seem to become unrealistic. After a horrific bus accident and a mysterious global blackout, Jack wakes up to discover that the Beatles (a popular English rock band from the 1960s) never existed. Singing their hit songs, Jack Malik becomes an overnight sensation with the support of his best friend, Ellie.

While the music gives this film a nostalgic feeling for viewers, the plot structure and cinematography lack orientation to the film’s central theme. I believe it is great that the Beatles’ principle legacy is cemented in society for new generations, but the delivery and execution of this message could have been improved.

Key people throughout the story do not receive characterization and depth, leaving a disconnection between the viewer and the film. With the addition of nauseating scene transitions and a confusing editing style, the film’s cinematography, I believe, takes away from what the film was attempting to convey.

Even though we would not be able to imagine a world without the Beatles, “Yesterday” tests the audience’s imagination and allows them to relive their favorite rock band in a whole new light. If you are looking for a fun look at entertainment, be sure to check out ‘Yesterday’ in theaters while you still can!
