Why Kids Should Try Multiple Sports At a Young Age and What Sports Teaches Them

As a competitive softball player I did not have a lot of time on my plate when I was little. I missed many birthday parties, school events and just hangouts with my friends. Playing sports shows a person's character and whether they are willing to put in the effort to become the best player they can be. Playing competitive softball was not easy but the passion I had for this sport developed when I was about ten years old, which is why it is so important for kids to try different sports when they are younger. Not allowing children to try different sports at a young age could potentially put them at a disadvantage when they’re older as well. People who find a passion for a sport or two as a child tend to train in that specific field so they can play competitively when they are older. If you allow your child to fall behind, then they may never know what sports they may like until they reach Middle School or High School and it may be too late to develop competitive skills. Allowing children to try sports at a young age gives them developmental experiences for being an active adult down the road.

In addition, playing sports at a young age helps kids build leadership, character and time management skills. Kids need these skills to excel in life when they get older. Joining multiple sports will help them develop these fundamental skills that will be essential in everyday life, as well as in the workforce. Different sports teach kids time management skills and allow kids to see different perspectives on things, as some sports require different types of training and team skills. For example, if kids decide to join gymnastics, this type of sport requires extensive training and less off time to hang out with friends and take vacations. On the other hand, if kids were to join baseball then this is more of a team sport which could teach them what it takes to be on a team and will teach them leadership skills as well as working with others to obtain goals. Trying different sports teaches children different aspects of life that they will need later on whether that is in the field of finding an occupation, choosing a college or deciding to take a different career path in life.

Overall, kids should try different sports as there are many positive aspects that can influence your path in life. Sports help develop skills for when kids grow older whether it is learning team skills, becoming a great athlete, teaching children skills in careers when they grow up or providing them a career in sports.
