Why I Chose Montclair State

Being a student athlete faces you with many decisions at a young age. Throughout high school, I had to determine what campus was best for me both academically and athletically.

During my college recruiting process I visited many schools located in New Jersey. The moment I toured Montclair State University, I knew that the search was over and this is where I would be spending the next four years. Here are some reasons why Montclair State was right for me:

I wasn't Ready To Leave Home. I never pictured myself moving far from home considering I enjoy spending time with my friends and family as much as possible. It was imperative for me that I was distant enough that I found independence but was still nearby in order to come back as I pleased. Moving north was definitely a transition that I enjoyed. Residing in Hillsborough does not provide you with much of a city lifestyle which is why I adored the change in scenery. Another important personal factor was that Montclair State was convenient for my family to be able to attend my softball games.

Opportunity. Montclair State is 18.7 miles from New York City and 14.4 miles from Hoboken. These cities are both massive hubs for many business professionals. A train station is located on campus that transfers you directly to these major cities. Being a business major, I found the proximity to NYC and Hoboken very appealing. MSU is known for their networking with major companies allowing alumni to score great jobs post graduation.

Small Class Sizes.  Although Montclair state possesses a sizable attendance (21,005 students) they manage to preserve small class sizes. The ratio of students to professors is 17:1 with the average class size being about 25, minus lecture halls of course. These class sizes allow students to connect with their professors, get one on one experience and get to know their classmates on a personal level.

MSU Rec Center

Business Program. The Montclair University Feliciano School of Business is accredited by AACSB International, the highest standard of accreditation for business schools worldwide. Not only are they ranked, they also have beautiful classrooms within their business school to help the learning process. Co-ops and internships, lectures on real-life issues, and chances to shadow corporate partners provide students with hands-on learning opportunities which prepare you for life outside of the classroom.

Facilities. On campus, there are many facilities that allow students to feel comfortable being away from home. One of my favorites is the rec center which provides a stunning place to workout, take fitness classes, swim, play basketball or play racquetball. All of this can be accomplished while taking in the NYC skyline. They also have many food options including two dining halls, Dunkin Donuts, Panera, California Tortilla, etc. To me, these were two critical factors needed in order to enjoy life away from home.

Athletics. Being a college athlete is extremely demanding. Finding a campus that pays close attention to student athletes to make sure that you can balance competing academic and athletic commitments is imperative. MSU has 18 Division III varsity teams that provide you with a community of support. With state of the art facilities as well as academic help centers, you have everything you need to be a successful student athlete.

Montclair State has provided me with opportunities, knowledge, friends and memories to last a lifetime. You know what they say, Once a Redhawk always a Redhawk.
